screen split/shifted

I'm using RH9 on a Dell Inspiron 8000. There is some sort of screensaving active although not configured by myself in Linux.

The _funny_ problem now is that after the screensaver (just darkens the screen btw.) is removed, the screen is "split" in two parts. The upper part of the screen shows the content of the lower part and vice versa with a "bar" in the middle.
I can fix that by entering e.g. Ctrl / Alt / F4 and then back with Ctrl / Alt / F7. But I imagine there must be a better way to keep it from "splitting".
Any hints are appreciated!
