Screen Recognition
Hey, I absolutely brand new to this stuff.:newbie: n e wayz, i installed debian. When it goes to configure X Windows, it detects my video card, my mouse, but then when it goes to detect my screen, it doesn't work. No matter wut i manually select, it still won't bring up the test screen. I'm running an ATi Mobility Radeon 64mb shared RAM on a P4 2.66 gHz Compaq nx9010 laptop w/ 512mb RAM. 1. is there n e thing i can do to fix this? 2. If i can't, how do i figure out the needed stuff to configure the screen manually

most probably the ATI card is the one that makees problems. Try to find a driver for it at ATI (they have BAAAAAAAD linux support). leave the autoconfig for your xserver, get the drivers and then run xf86config from the console. this one is gonna ask you a few questions and then config should be done.

yeah, i've already looked for linux drivers, can't find n e for my vid card, not on ATi's site, or compaqs site

What Xfree version do you use? I assume you have 4.3.x havent you? If not, upgrade to it, ATI support got better in 4.3.x than in previous versions. Maybe then...

Or try it with standard vga drivers (svga unaccelerated, but at least it works for 2d apps). you will need luck to find any developer packages (but there are some around, I just never cared about them, cos I dont have ATI)

good luck

version 4.3.0, sry it took so long, power outage fried campus network

ok, so in this case, you will have to look for developer drivers (instable) or, you use the svga driver. Later one, does not have HW accel, but at least, you can work on a niche graphical desktop...
