Screen Mode Wierdness W/ Dell Latitude C600

I have a Dell Latitude C600 notebook running Gentoo. Runs like a charm except for a couple of graphics related issues:

I have the VESA framebuffer enabled in the kernel. I have all of the correct stuff entered into my grub.conf file to properly feed it the expected mode, logo, etc. However, it appears to ignore it completely. I get a 1/2 sized screen during the character portion of the boot (I have gdm enabled).

I have tried everything I can think of to adjust the parameters. I have fed the resolution directive as both decimal and hex. I have tried enabling the ATI framebuffer driver, switched back to the VESA driver at the recommendation of multiple users. All to no avail.

Ultimately I do have a method of adjusting the screen resolution to the correct size using the fbset utility. I just can't get the kernel to boot with the proper settings.

Anybody have any clue?

The other issue applies to both the framebuffer console and X11. When the system starts GDM, the synch rate or something seems to be off -- UNTIL I RESET THE GRAPHICS SYSTEM BY CLOSING THE COVER AND REOPENING IT! Once the system comes out of suspend, the graphics mode corrects and, voila, the beautiful Gentoo Emergence login screen is resoved in 24-bit color.

Is there some obscure setting I need to change here? I'm pretty familiar with Linux/GNU from the character mode end of things, but I am FAR from an X11 guru.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Steve
