screen hanging after closing laptop lid

I am running RHEL on HP Compaq 6510b. when i close the lid for the laptop, on opening the screen does not respond. Keyboard and mouse hang as well.
I had not configured the actions to do when i close the lid. But how do i recover this since i am in the middle of an installation?

Try closing and re-opening the lid. I have a similar problem on my HP Compaq 8510w.

Edit with slackware 13.37 ( kernel)
