Screen detected but no hdmi output on external screen (Asus Rog g552vw)
Hello,
I'm trying to connect an external monitor on my laptop and I can't get it to work.
The screen works fine in bios/grub and windows but as soon as KMS start it goes black.
It seems to be properly detected as xrandr gives:

The screen detects that it has been plugged in but stays black (with backlight), sometimes it somehow flashes the image for a brief moment (~100ms) with some green artifacts and go back to black. It seems to flash more often and stay longer on in lower resolutions / frequency rates.
Things I have already tried so far:
Using another HDMI cable with no notable differences
Using another external screen (my TV): doesn't work either but can display very low resolutions with a screeching sounds coming out from the hdmi audio
Doing a fresh arch install
Using / Not using xf86-video-intel
Using / Not using nvidia / nouveau / nvidia_prime
Meddling with i915 kernel parameters: fastboot, enable_guc, enable_fbc, enable_psr, ...
Manually extracting EDID info and forcing it at initramfs
You probably need a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/nn-video.conf where 'nn' = 00-99. Files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d take precedence over the default configs in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
nn-video.conf is the video section of Xorg.conf of old. 'man xorg.conf' is your friend. It needs to have a ServerLayout section, saying what's connected to what. Then for each screen you have, it needs
A Monitor Section
A Device Section
A Screen Section
Use the 'man xorg.conf' stuff to configure it. Pretend it's stupid, and set as many options as you can safely do to point it in the right direction. It's actually rather clever, and figures stuff out itself. Don't bother setting complicated video stuff; but if hdmi is your main monitor, set that option. If it's a secondary option, set it as the same, right, or left.
I for instance, used one to set up a 1600×900 laptop screen with either a hdmi 1280×720 projector on the right, or a hdmi 1920×1080 monitor on the right. Alternatively, there was an unknown monitor on the vga cable. also on the right. X simply ignores what's not there.
Thanks for your detailed answer. I tried playing with xorg conf without success. The thing is, for X everything seems fine: the screen is here the resolution is good there's just no image on screen.
I tried that too, even running weston from the tty to try with wayland.
In fact as soon as KMS is here my screen goes black, when I disable it with nomodeset my screen stays on but I can’t run anything graphical.
Ok, get out /var/log/Xorg.0.log, cut the reams of ok stuff and let's see about 2 screenfuls near the end as it struggles with graphics trying to set a mode.
And here's the stripped Xorg.log with auto configuration and nvidia drivers with PRIME*enabled:

If you just look at the (EE) entries, it fails to find the 'nv' module, never loads it, and that never gets off the ground. The Nvidia binary blob blacklists nouveau, so check /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.
It doesn't seem to happy with the Intel driver either. Nothing worth having should be looking for fbdev or vesa, which are both from the early 1990s and only support 4:3 screens. I never install either.
With 2 video cards, you're going to have to choose which, if either is worth having. I'd reinstall both drivers. The (WW) lines are worth reading, the (EE) lines are show stoppers usually. I'd reinstall both drivers and knock yourself out. The (EE) lines have to be fixed.
