Satellite Pro 4200 and wireless, suggestions?
Hi Everyone,
I know this type of thread gets beaten to death, but I just wondered if anyone has had any specific experience with this old laptop. It is a PIII 500mz with 128mb mem and currently has Win2000 Pro installed. The laptop is incredibly slow to boot (tons of spyware and viruses removed but probably still leaving their mark.) I plan on dumping Windows and going for a Linux distro which is faily lightweight. I know there are a number I can use, so choosing a distro is not really a problem. My question is this: Oddly, this laptop (2001 vintage) does not have an ethernet port. I have been able to use the usb port with a realtek usb adapter to my router in Windows. Since there is no ethernet port, I would like to use a wireless connection to my Belkin router. Belkin support (at least in their wireless cards) for Linux is really bad. So, before I wipe the hard drive, has anyone ever had really good success with a specific wireless pcmia card in Linux? Further, can anyone recommend a pcmia wireless card/linux distro combination for this old laptop? I have used a number of Live cd distros with this laptop, and except for the really memory intensive ones, they all seem to work fine. This laptop will be my workhorse I will carry around with me but will be useless if I can't get online. Anyone with any ideas? Any help very much appreciated. Bob |
