Samba

Hello all

I am running Ubuntu 7.04 and can't connect to my Windows 2k pro desktop.

In Windows, the desktop machine appears in the workgroup folder and I have shared several folders.

I have Zone alarm installed but have shut it down incase it was stopping me accessing the desktop machine.

How do I find if samba is working and will it work over wifi.

Thanks
Tim

Samba

Thanks for the reply Simon

I took your advice regarding Ubuntu and got the updates via the cat5 now I have wireless and reasonable graphics, so thans for your help there.

The laptop will be the client as all the info I need to access is on the desktop.

All of the data on both is backed up to a re-writeable dvd which is on the desktop.

Regards
Tim

Cool, so the link in my last post tells you how to set up the desktop as a samba server.

To backup your laptop data, over your network, use rsync.
http://everythinglinux.org/rsync/

If you are mostly interested in file sharing between linu/unix machines, consider NFS. http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba...ch/025795.html
