Running X11 in 640x480 with i810

I have an Intel Centrino Notebook (HP Compaq nx6110) running Ubuntu Linux. In general I use 1024x768 for XWindows which works fine.

However, for playing starcraft in fullscreen (because it is quite annoying in a window) I would need to change the resolution to 640x480. With some years linux experience, I thought this should be no problem and wrote the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation Intel Default Card"
        Monitor "Standardbildschirm"
        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 16
                Modes "640x480"
I restarted X and nothing happened. Resolution is still 1024x768 and is not changeable via the resolution tool of GNOME. 810resolution told me that there is a video mode for 640x480x16. And I am sure that X uses this config file because it wont start if I corrupt it.

I feel I completely miss out something here.

Thanks for any hints,
