RH 8.0 on Dell Latitude D600 freezed on boot
Hi,
i install Linux Red Hat 8.0 on a laptop( Dell Latitude D600). After the installation, i boot the system for the first time, linux generate an error. I think its a irq error. This is the message: PCI_IDE: unknown IDE controler on PCI BUS 00 device f9, vid=8086, did=24ca PCI: enabling device 00:1f.1 (0005 -> 0007) PCI: found IRQ 11 for device 00:1f.1 PCI: sharing IRQ 11 with 00:1d.2 PCI_IDE: chipset revision 1 PCI_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later ide0: BM-DMA at 0xbfa0-0xbfa7, BIOS settings:hda: DMA, hdb: pio ide0: BM-DMA at 0xbfa0-0xbfa7, BIOS settings:hda: DMA, hdb: pio after this message, the pc freezed. Anyone know a solution? mailto andrea.to85@libero.it |
Does anybody have any suggestions on this problem ?
I have exactly the same issue (ie. boot hanging after the "ide1: BM-DMA at ... hdd:pio" message) trying to install RH8 on a D600 (so I thought it better to add to this thread rather than start a new one with the same question). I have tried assorted boot options (eg. ide1=noautotune noprobe npapic ide=nodma apm=off ...) and no conbination seems to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated - Thanks |
I have not been able to get over this problem under RH8, but in case anybody is interested, the problem does not occur under RHEL 3 (as in RH Professional Workstation). A vanilla install worked fine on the same hardware.

Hi all,
I have exactly the same problem. I have installed Red hat 8.0 several times and each time when it tries to boot it stops at exactly the same place. See above. Stragely enought (or perhaps not) it seems to boot OK from the first CD with linux rescue. It looks as if the kernel is not recognising the hard-drive ?? Anybody have any ideas ?? thanks Ashok |
Re: RH 8.0 on Dell Latitude D600 freezed on boot
I had a similar problem with Gentoo on my D800 - turns out I had a typo in this line of my lilo.conf:
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.26-gentoo-r6 |
Did changing the lilo.conf help anyone?? How do you change this file if the system wont even boot?? Is the line quoted by Finch "initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.26-gentoo-r6" the corrected line, or the incorrect line??
I'm so confused and I can't get this to work either. |
