RFA : Help need to boot with X from external USB drive
Objective : Install Linux of an external USD HD, and use with any laptop.
Accomplished : a) Installed Fedora 20 b) Verified it boots on multiple laptops c) Enabled XFCE Question : How can the installation be made intelligent to dynamically sense the video card type and load the related driver ? Intention is to carry USB drive and use any available laptop to work. Thanx C S Palkar -- |
I routinely take full installs on flash drives between systems with onboard Nvidia and Intel graphics without any obvious problems. What problems are you encountering?

isnt this what liveusb-creator was specifically designed to achieve ?
|
liveusb-creator puts the read-only image from the iso onto the device, with the option of adding a persistent overlay for / and another for /home. My experience is that persistent storage fills up rather quickly and is quite susceptable to corruption (obviously, YMMV). On the other hand, a full install is a full install, be it on a USB flash drive, a USB hard drive, or an internal drive.

With Debian you can either select a kernel image just for the machine installing to or with all the drivers, which allows you to move from machine to machine.
