resolution on inspiron 600m wont go above 1024x768

I'm running debian etch, with xorg 7.1 on dell inspiron 600m with a radeon 9000. The specifications say that the screen can handle 1400x1050 resolution, but when i change to a higher resolution than 1024x768 the display stays the same size but i can scroll with the mouse as if it was a larger display. I've tried changing the xorg.conf but I don't really know what I'm doing any suggestions would be much appreciated

Open a Konsole/terminal and Try as root:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Answer the questions it asks. Leave things default if you do not know it. At some point the resolution can be chosen.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X-server / reboot the machine.

I've already tried that, it doesn't help it just loads up in 1024x768 except you can scroll over a large area by moving the mouse to the edges of the screen

If not how to fix it, does anyone know where the problem could lay? would it be a problem with configuring xorg, or is it something to do with how the drivers are setup?

I've had a similar problem with refresh rate (Dell D620 on a dock)that was set too low. I had to go in and configure the correct monitor. Once the refresh rate was set to 85hz, everything was fine. You might try checking that.
