Removable/Detachable CDROMs

I haven't seen this anywhere, so I thought I'd ask here. I have a Dell Inspiron 8200. I have the built in DVD-ROM, and the media-bay CDRW. I normally run with 2 batteries installed, one in the media bay. Is there any way to switch between battery and CDRW on the fly? I tried swaping these two (crossing my fingers it would 'just work'). Of course nothing happened. And I do mean nothing, not anything in dmesg (i was hoping for an error or something...)

Will enabling ide-scsi help this? Is there some kernel setting I'm missing (IDE hotplug)? I assume that PCI hotplug won't work (or will it?). Is there some other package out there that can handle this type ofCDROM?

root@tucaxi linux # uname -r
