remote x via xdm and display xapm

I'm putting this in laptops since that's what I'm using, but the issue is more general and really is a remote X app question. Here it goes:
I've setup my old laptop to get remote session from my new desktop machine. I get the login via xdm. Now I'm no remote x expert, so what I'm asking for might be very simple to do. I want to have apm show up on my X display (laptop) which is running on my desktop. (sorry terminology gets confusing since I want to be careful to distinguish x client, the desktop, from x server, the laptop).

No I know what I'm asking is possible since I can do this when I get X session via ssh, as follows:

from laptop start X.
start xapm

then ssh to remote box (my desktop), taking care to forward X11
and startkde.

This will display the kde on my laptop and the battery monitor is there as well.

This is cool since I get to use the horsepower of my desktop and still monitor my laptop battery.

But I don't know how to achieve this if I request the X session via xdm. I.e., if on the laptop I did
X -inquire deskTopHost

Then any attemp to start xapm on my laptop would say unable to connect to X server.

?? Help please ??

thanks,
charlie
