Angry redhat 9 upgrade on sony vaio laptop

I am trying to upgrade my laptop (a sony vaio pcg-z505ls) to redhat 9.0 I am already running rh 8.0 on it. when I boot off the cd (its a pcmcia cdrom) the kernel loads and I get a blank blue screen that says "welcome to redhat" at the top and at the bottom of the screen it says "tab/alt-tab= move between fields; space selects; F12=next screen"

but there is nothing else on the screen. I've tried entering "linux text" and "linux lowres" at the boot prompt but still get the same behavior. RH 8.0 loaded fine, any ideas?

Solution! (at least for me)

I needed to do two things:

1) Use the boot floppy images (bootdisk.img and pcmciadd.img)

2) Specify the following bootloader option
linux ide2=0x180,0x386
