Red Hat Linux 9 shutdown problem

I am running Red Hat Linux 9 on HP zv5160us notebook.
When I try to logout or shutdown the computer gets stuck. (black screen)
I suspect a problem with the video card (is there a driver for ATI mobility 9000IGP?)

Any suggestions?

also is ur apmd/acpid service runnig or not

service acpid status
service apmd status

to start it

service acpid start
service apmd status

Before logging out check the process id of the X server.
At logout that process might get killed. Some script might be running which crashes ur x server.
Still u press alt-ctrl-f1 to f6 any of the combination you will get into virtual console.still u won't see anything on the screen but it is there. Type halt and press enter. System will halt.
next time u on it everything will be ok
check any script running at logout time.
