This is my first taste of Linux and I'm not sure of where to go. I just installed Red Hat 9.0 on my laptop, and it doesn't look like very many drivers are loaded. I am not 100% sure where to look (Device Manager in Windows) to see, either. I know that my internal modem is not installed, and doubt that it will be because I'm 99% sure it is a WinModem. It says that my video drivers are installed correctly, and I'm supposedly using the right drivers, but the display just doesn't look right. Again, first taste of Linux, but I know that with Windows, I had a MUCH better picture. Forgive me for the ignorance, I've just searched for days and have come up with nothing. I would like to hook the laptop to my cable modem eventually, so can anyone suggest a good, supported PCMCIA card? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the reply. I will get that NIC tomorrow night after work. In regards to the modem, I can't find a definitive answer on the net as to exactly what model of modem I have, so I was just assuming that it is a WinModem given the fact that it is internal. I will download and run that tool to find out what kind of modem I have once I get the NIC working and on the net finally. I'm going to show my true newbie colors here, but what did you mean by:
For the display... hmm, What's the config file look like? Paste in this file:
The file /etc/X11/XF86Config is where all of the display settings for your graphics card/monitor are stored. Redhat's autoconfiguration tool is conservative to the point of being cowardly, so its best to take a look at the file and tweak it by hand. If you open a Konsole or xterm or whatever and:
more /etc/X11/XF86Config
it'll run about 3 pages long, and cut'n'paste chunks of it into the post box here, I can take a look at it and see how much RH monkeyed it up.
Of course, easiest to do after you have net access.
