Record video using laptop webcam

How can I record a video by using my laptop webcam in Linux?

Note that I want the following.

1) Both audio and video can be recorded together.

2) I should be able see myself while the recording goes on.

3) I should have control over the duration and when I want to stop recording.

I have tried with Cheese. But it shows myself though the webcam, but doesn't do recording.

Also the mencoder or mplayer instructions that I found in the internet, don't the 3 criteria that I have mentioned. And it seems also difficult to understand those commands, so I can't do any modification so that I can get control.

Thanks in advance.

When you will start cheese , you will see three options on the left bottom side, the first one is for photos, second one is video recording, Before starting the recording, check once your mike settings. In my machine, cheese is working fine. Else there is one more way which is obviously not so good way. Install gtkrecordmydesktop, start cheese in full screen mode and start recording through recordmydesktop.
