RAM for installing Linux

Hi folks
I was suggested to increase my laptop RAM which is currently 128MB SDRAM before installing Linux.
Now,only one socket of my machine is used by one 128MB RAM module. Can I add another one of 256MB to make a total of 384 or it has to be of equal in pair - ie 2x128 or 2x256.
Please let me know ASAP.
Thanks

It depends on what make and model your laptop is. But generally - yes, you can pop in a module of another capacity as long as the speed and size of the module is correct. There are a whole slew of different types of laptop memory, with PC100 and PC133 SDRAM SO-DIMMs (SO = short outline) being common in recent but not new laptops, and DDR SDRAM SO-DIMMs of different speeds being the most commonly used memory modules in current laptops. Some laptops require the use of low profile SO-DIMMs, so make sure you get everything right before you buy anything and read the manual for your laptop.

Also, posting in multiple sections here is considered very rude.
