It depends on what make and model your laptop is. But generally - yes, you can pop in a module of another capacity as long as the speed and size of the module is correct. There are a whole slew of different types of laptop memory, with PC100 and PC133 SDRAM SO-DIMMs (SO = short outline) being common in recent but not new laptops, and DDR SDRAM SO-DIMMs of different speeds being the most commonly used memory modules in current laptops. Some laptops require the use of low profile SO-DIMMs, so make sure you get everything right before you buy anything and read the manual for your laptop.
