Problems with network manager gnome

I am a newbie to linux. I just installed debian 6.0.1a LXDE on my Asus eeepc 701 4g. I got the synaptic package manager and from there I installed network manager gnome. I didn't see it so I rebooted and when my system came back on the wifi program was there. I opened to connect and noticed there is no option for WEP only WPA. Can't remember how I have my wifi setup but I logged in and said I was connected. I open iceweasel and I cannot surf the web, but if I plug in my ethernet I can surf? Also I tried to turn off wifi so I ran it off the ethernet only and I could not get the bottom of the window. I suck at using a touch pad and do not have a mouse. Not even sure if I was doing it right. Can someone give me some directon? Thanks.

Pam

You can drag windows while you keep the <alt> button pressed; in that case you can have your mouse pointer anywhere in the window and this will allow you to see the bottom of a window that is too big.

Open terminal and issue the commands in bold in the code blocks below. The first one can be used to check if you have gotten an ip-address (see red marked text).

Code:
wim@aa0:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:68:be:2c:08
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
          Interrupt:28

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:380 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:380 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:11600 (11.3 KiB) TX bytes:11600 (11.3 KiB)

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:69:47:00:6e
          inet addr:192.168.2.104 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::222:69ff:fe47:6e/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:2364 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:2552 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:812992 (793.9 KiB) TX bytes:335002 (327.1 KiB)
The second one is used to check if there might be an issue with DNS; I think it's quite normal to see the address of your wireless router there.

Code:
wim@aa0:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 192.168.2.1
wim@aa0:~$

I don't know why my wireless connection didn't work last night but it is working now. I don't see any where to connect to an unsecure wep. I want to be able to pick up a connection in airports when I travel.

Just tried Chrunchbang in the office and it also offers only a WPA option. It however offered all options at home when I wanted to connect to a hidden wireless.

My guess:
It can determine the type of encryption on a wireless network. But I might be wrong.

Sorry, chrunchbang is a distro. So it will remove everything if you install it
