Unhappy Problems with low sound volume on Fujitsu Siemens Amilo

I have this old laptop that doesn't have a working hard drive so I'm trying to run something from live usb. I'm using puppy linux but have also tried with xubuntu... same problem. Everything works ok (even better than expected except the sound. It has very low volume. And if I try to change the volume, it goes up for a moment but than immediately back to low. Slider stays like I set, but the volume is very low again. Is this even possible to fix??

Perhaps. You could tell us what the laptop, souncard, sound server, distro and kernel version is. Give us a real clue what youŕe working with, so we can bring experience to bear on your problem. I would hunt in /sys or /proc for files that relate, as they may well tell you what is happening.

- It's the Amilo Pi 1536 laptop.
- lspci output for a card: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02).
- kernel: 2.6.33.2
- distro is Puppy linux

I'm just trying to watch a movie with VLC player. The computer is not capable of much more
But it's the same with playing other audio or youtube video.

You could try:

# alsactl store

after you set the volume levels. Different distros do it different ways. But the alsamixer "saved" settings seem to always override default ways. YMMV. In debian aumix settings are ignored if asound-state exists (alsamixer / asound-state). And things like that.
