Problems installing Mandrake 10.0 on a Dell Latitude D800

After partitioning my Dell Latitude D800, I attempted to install Mandrake 10.0. After completing the installation process of Mandrake 10.0, apparently successfully, I rebooted and LILO came up as expected. I selected the default Linux and it started to boot up. Everything was fine until my sound card erupted with a loud tone! I waited a few minutes hoping that this annoying loud tone would stop but it never did. I had to manually turn my laptop off.
Before during and after the tone incident, I was monitoring the verbose mode on my laptop and noticed the boot up process paused. I can't recall what part or function failed, but I think the sound card initialization would probably be a good guess.

I've successfully installed Mandrake 10.0 on another Dell Inspiron 1100 at home, using the same partitioning format, therefore, I doubt the problem is with the MBR or any such thing related to hard drive partitioning. I suspect the problem is unique to the D800. Has anyone successfully installed Mandrake 10.0 on the D800? Or any distro for that matter?

Try booting in fail-safe mode and disable the sound card as root using this command 'chkconfig --del sound'

Then reboot into normal and see if that works. If it does then your sound card was mis-reported and you need to manually select it.

If you can't then you might have to use it without sound.

And BTW, 10.0 isn't supported anymore as it is END-OF-LIFE
