Question Problems booting to a Compact Flash card

I have a device using Linux from a Compact Flash card and I will like to make an image of it and copy it to another Compact Flash card. I am trying to copy the Compact Flash through my Laptop running RedHat (2.4.20-8) and a PCMCIA CF adaptor. I have used:

dd if=/dev/hde of=image.bootable

to create an image and:

dd if=image.bootable of=/dev/hde

to copy the image on to the new card but the new card will not boot. I think Linux on the new card is not reading the Partition Table correctly. Can anyone tell me how to force Linux to recognise the partition table?

The cards have two ext2 partitions.

Any help will be greatly appreciate.

Thank you,

Neil

Is the new compact flash of the same size as the old one (or larger)?

I just had the problem, that the image of a "red 64 MB compact flash" (made with dd) did not fit on an "orange 64 MB compact flash".
The orange 64 MB were to small, so i went for blue ...
No to be honest, a 128 MB compact flash worked fine.
... allthough it was orange as well.

My recent problem to get a compact flash bootable.
- filesystem is on the destination flash (mkfs)
- the tar-file of the source flash is untared to the destination
now:
How do i get it bootable?
I tried it with lilo. But lilo always wants to access the mbr of my Knoppix-CD.
How do i convince lilo to work on the mbr of the compact flash.

any suggestions, ... i am feeling rather stupid allready.
