I had Windows XP initially on my Acer TravelMate Laptop. Then I installed FC4 with GRUB on the D:\ drive that was in windows. Then by mistake, I formatted the partition into a FAT32 from Windows. After I rebooted my computer, I found that I could not get into Windows as GRUB freezes (I don't even get a GRUB prompt). I can't reinstall my MBR as I can't get into BIOS to change the options. As I have a laptop, I can't boot from a floppy. I can't change the first boot device to CD-ROM from HDD. What can I do? Is there any method to disable GRUB or bypass GRUB? Please HELP
I know that the key to go into bios is F2. I could get into BIOS till recently. I am locked out only after this incident. Theres NO WAY I can get into BIOS just by pressing Key Combinations (and please don't suggest keys like DEL or F10 or F1 or Esc+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+BkSpace etc ). I've already tried all that. Is there any other way? I'll tell you how BIOS is configured. I remember it perfectly.
First boot device: HDD
Second boot device: CD-ROM
Boot Other Device: Enabled.
Is there a way to skip booting from hard disk by either removing GRUB or anything else. Please...
With that boot order, your options are rather limited.. But, am I mistaken that if it cannot boot the hdd, it will attempt the cdrom, right? So, get some live distribution or other linux CD (even some installdisks will do, slackware disks e.g.) and chroot your sentient distribution and reinstall grub. Instructions for that are all around the web, even here.. Use the search (:
Well I don't believe an system installation has anything to do with the BIOS. If you can't get to the BIOS it is most probably the owner has installed a password to protect the system.
The BIOS is independent of any operating system and totally immune to its installation.
If your are the legal owner then there should be somewhere a mechanism to reset the BIOS to the factory setting, thereby destroying the password system. Not familiar with laptops myself, as they are company-supplied, I suppose it would be mentioned in the handbook somewhere.
Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
