problem with setting right screen resolution in Debian Lenny

Hello!

Sorry for opening another thread on same subject...

Since upgrade to Lenny I have permanent problem with my screen resolution. My laptop is Toshiba Satellite 1800 with Trident CyberBlade video card. There were no troubles while running Debian Etch.

My problem is that even though maximum screen resolution is 1240x780, I can use only 800x600 and 480x320. I'm running Xorg and Gnome Desktop. I've read few howtos and tried to write my own xorg.conf using modeline, but with slight success. I only succeded with setting 1240x780 scrollable window inside the 800x600 frame (the rest of the screen is black). Which is rather strange. It seems there must be some other setting before the xorg.conf during the boot up process? Ofcourse, setting screen via grub made no difference...

I wouldn't write this if I didn't try myself first (and failed), so please someone who know what to do can help me?

Thanks, Karel.

Have you tried running without an xorg.conf at all? This should work fine if you have hal running. Do you have the trident video driver installed? If it doesn't load automatically you might want a minimal xorg.conf to specify the driver.

Make sure you read through (and post) Xorg.0.log

I believe xserver-xorg in Lenny (1.7.3) still needs an xorg.conf. The problem that I have found with laptops is the dual screen capability. In gnome check preferences -> display and turn off the external display. Once only the laptop display is 'on' in software X will allow the full resolution on the remaining screen.

By the way, xorg.conf can be defaulted with the following run as root
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
A posting of your xorg.conf and X logs would be helpful.

Thank you for your help.

I tried what I could, but with no result. Running xorg without xorg.conf results in error message and finally it`s necessary to make some xorg.conf anyway. (I know about dpkg-reconfigure already...)

I didn`t understand what to do with multiple screens management in Gnome, but anyway it seems to be not the problem. If I understand it well, it seems that I have to pass right arguments to trident driver (I have installed one which comes with Lenny) BEFORE xorg.conf comes to use? Because still, I could only have 1024x768 VIRTUAL screen inside the (real) 800x600 box. I want to change THIS box size...

As well, I tried different settings of `modeline` in xorg.conf suggested by the `gtf` or `cvt`, but apparently with no result.

I`m posting my Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf in next reply (too long). If someone can help me, I would be glad!

I realize this thread is a few weeks old but it doesn't seem to have been resolved. If you still still have this problem ...

Have you tried modifying xorg.conf to specify the driver? e.g.:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "trident"
EndSection
Also, you can try replacing your monitor and screen sections with these:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
	Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Default Screen"
	Device "Configured Video Device"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	DefaultDepth 16
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth 16
# you can add additional display modes to the following line:
		Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
Note: The "Modeline ..." and "Option PreferredMode ..." lines are intentionally omitted from this Monitor section.

Thank you for your help! I have already tried everything. And with no succes.

Than, desperately, I was searching for same problem on japanese language web pages. Because I bought my Toshiba in Japan... And there I`ve found something about HorizSync and VertRefresh. I`ve already tried to put some values which I`ve found in Xorg.0.log, but it didn`t make any difference. Than I tried to add dimensions which were written on somebody`s page. Just for chance. And behold! it works now!

For anyone who wants to look, here is my new xorg.conf:
Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Generic Keyboard"
	Driver "kbd"
	Option "XkbRules"	"xorg"
	Option "XkbModel"	"jp106"
	Option "XkbLayout"	"jp"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
	Driver "mouse"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Driver "trident"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
	HorizSync 31.50-81.00
	VertRefresh	40.00-75.00
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	DefaultDepth 16
		SubSection "Display"
			Virtual 1024 768
      			Depth 16
			Modes "1024x768" "800x600"
   		EndSubSection
EndSection
I would apreciate anyway, if anyone can tell me, how can I get correct values for my Horizsync and Vertrefresh.

Merry X-mass to all!
Karel.
