Problem with encrypted(?) PAL DVD playback

i'm having a problem that is quite particular and specific and can find very little in terms of posts that might correspond.

i have installed ubuntu 12.04 (fresh install) on an HP compaq tc4400 w/ external DVDRW. everything is fine and working OK, except i cannot playback encrypted PAL DVDs despite having libdvdcss2, libdvdread4 etc. installed. i have run the script:

Quote:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
i have also installed mplayer, xine and vlc as well as ubuntu-restricted-extras.

i have no problem playing any NTSC discs and some PAL discs (assuming unencrypted), but a good deal of my PAL discs are returning the standard error message:

Quote:

Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed.
this is happening with DVDs from BFI, StudioCANAL, BBCfilms, ITC etc.

running the program in terminal returns:

Quote:

user@blahblah:~$ totem

I've never understood install-css.sh -- personally I tend to enable the restricted repositories then manually install libdvdcss2 and libdrdread4 and libdvdnav4 (and possibly some I can't recall, but I search for dvd) manually. It's probably worth checking in the software centre that these are installed.

NTSC works fine, PAL doesnt? I would bet its the region coding on your DVD drive.

%&$%# region coding, IMO it should never have been allowed.

yes. but it isn't just a question of PAL v NTSC. it is encrypted PAL that doesn't work, i think. i have been able to play quite few of my PAL DVDs, and am therefore assuming that these are not encrypted.

dmesg | tail command returned something interesting:

this was with no disc in the drive and would tend to make me think you are correct. i am just wondering what to do about it? i am leery about using regionset.

cascade9 03-09-2013 03:33 AM

If its not encrypted the region coding normally doesnt matter. Mostly they are 'region 0' discs.

It is possible to change the region coding on the drive, but the number of times you can do that is limited.

I've heard that you can set region to 'all', but in some cases discs will refuse to work with region all set.

Sorry 'm not much more help, I dont have any DVDs that are from a different region to mine so its not soemthing I've ever had to learn about....

thanks anyway. this problem seems to be a recent development with the change in "region protection" firmware from phase 1 to phase 2. from what i've been able to find out since initially posting is that the best solution is probably just to buy a drive that i know to be rpc-1.

still open to suggestions...
