A problem kernel module - Where is it loaded?

I had this working the other day so I'm scratching my head.

I have an i8k.ko module:
/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko

to get modprobe to work (a bit awkward, please help), I cd to /sbin and
./modprobe i8k

This worked yesterday but now I get this:

Code:
[root@localhost sbin]# ./modprobe i8k FATAL: Error inserting i8k
(/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko): No such device
it's definately there:
Code:
[root@localhost sbin]# ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 14760 Jun 3 13:42
/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp/kernel/drivers/char/i8k.ko
Help!

Additionally, dmesg shows repeating:
i8k: unable to get SMM Dell signature
i8k: unable to get SMM BIOS version

Using the force option for i8k, this works:

modprobe i8k force=1

This is unusual, because the driver force option is only for non-inspiron machines and I have an inspiron.

This might explain the dmesg errors. What some have suggested is I add the command to the profile and ignore the errors. I'm not sure I agree with this. Temporarily, I've added this command to the end of my /etc/profile, but of course, there should be a better place, where the modules are loaded, and should add the force option there.

---

I load the module during boot amoungst the boot scripts, then gkrellm takes over a login.
