No offence, but we're gonna have to have a lot more information to help you out there.
Ok, so we have the model of your laptop, what distro are you trying to install? mandrake 10.1? Slackware 10.1? What are you doing when it freezes? what does the screen say? is it booting after you have installed it, or did you just finish copying oer all the files..
i'm using mandrake 9.2 before with out problem...well ..the network card is not supported.i'm also using windows xp.i got a dual boot system.
then i switch to mandrake 10.1 (new installation).dual boot with wndows XP.during installation i found out all my hardware is supported.
the problem started just after installation..
when the boot selection screen come out. i chose linux.
then the screen was loading fine.
after that the screen turn blank , it was nothing at all.
my friend also encounter same problem..but he was using laptop base on intel graphic. he solved it by pdating newest gart driver.
for my case i cant find any ati gart driver on the net , ACER , not even on ATI web site.
A lot of people are having problems with the ATI graphics cards, you should search around linuxquestions.org for something on that (I don't have that card, so I don't know what issues come with it)
You might also want to try turning acpi=off when you boot. (add it as a setting on the grub entry for whatever kernel you wanna boot from) Have you tried booting from the nofb?
I have a aspire 1501LNI and it did the same, here is what i did to get it working. Take off autologin and when u get to the login screen, select your user and login.
I'm using an ACER Aspire 1680 too and I'v had the same probleme as you.
But you can fix it without much problem. The problem is that the new version of Mandrake have a more or less stable acpi, but with acer it doesn't work at all.
So you need to modify the boot sequence by turnin acpi on off. To do this, boot with de dvd or cd, pass all, and when you configure the multiboot utility, go into advanced and change on "linux" acpi=on to acpi=off and it should work. But without power managment.
If you know a version wich work, can you please say it.
Same problem Acer Aspire 1680 and black screen when trying to load ACPI.
I cannot find proper distribution for my laptop neither. SuSE 9.1 works, but it doesn't have most stuff I need to have installed, like GCC for example (I'm noob so I'm looking for something like Mandrake DVD with everything set).
I tried also SuSE 9.2 DVD, but it doesn't even start installation!! I got an error which says: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,3)
Finally I have installed Suse 9.2 the version in cds and it works.
ACPI work also but I don't have an indicator for the batterie.
and the gcc, etc. with yast it's so easy to install from the cd/dvd. You only need to lunch Yast and click on install software.
Ps: somes have told me that with an acpi patch you can resolve the problem. But as I'm only a newbie on linux I haven't even tried.
And now with Suse, have no problem.
Now... configure the wireless... that's rough on linux I think.
I've downloaded SuSE 9.2 DVD version again, and installation process starts now Previous image must have been broken.
So far I have working 9.1 version and I learned how to add additional software YaST is really very user friendly, though some stuff I had to add manualy from bash. After Easter I'll try to install 9.2 DVD version.
