Problem booting Puppy Linux livecd
1999 IBM ThinkPad
Pentium II ~400mhz 10gb HDD 128mb ram And a DVD Drive!!..... Anyhoo, been trying out minimal linux distros on this old laptop, (antiX, PCLinuxOS Minime, DSL). I am trying Puppy Linux as a last distro before making a final decision. All of the aforementioned distros worked, with some better than others, but they all worked. Puppy worked perfectly on my newer laptop, but will not even boot the liveCD on the ThinkPad, here's how far it gets: I get the same message with all or none of the following boot options (also tried the prfx=ram): boot: initrd=initrd.gz root=/dev/rd/3 acpi=off vga=normal keyb=us noapic nolapic noscsi nopcmcia Loading kernel drivers [done] Searching for puppy files in computer disk drives [done] loading 'pup_301.sfs' main file... [failed] Dumping last lines of /tmp/bootinit.log ..... mount: /dev/hdc is write protected, mounting mount: mounting /dev/hdc on /mnt/dev_ro2 failed /mnt/dev_ro2/pup_301.sfs : nosuch file or directory mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /pup_ro2 failed Dumping last lines of kernel log... <6> EXT-3fs: mounted file system with ordered data mode <7> ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A <4> bio too bif device loop0 ( 2 < 0 ) SQUASH FS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0x0 pausing for 60 seconds... Set up the Unionfs layered filesystem Perform a 'switch_root' to the new unionfs filesystem.... kernel panic-not syncing: attempted to kill init! |
If all the other distros booted except Puppy, I would suspect a bad CD or DVD burn first. Try burning it again and see if it helps, perhaps downloading and running an md5sum on the image first before burning.

I have run puppy from my acer laptop and installed it to usb last night. the cd works fine, but i'll try to burn it again for the hell of it.

Ragnarok Warrior,
Did you have any luck getting this sorted? I'm in exactly the same situation as you! |
Two versions of Puppy 4.x
Hello,
If the first version doesn't work try the other one for older hardware. Good luck, ChiJoan in Reno |
This most likely will work:
Enter this at boot. Code:
puppy pfix=ram,noram |
Just joined the forum today because I found your post when I googled my problem. It is exactly the same as you have experienced.
Has anyone worked out the cause and solution for this yet? I have been unsuccessfully trying to solve this problem for over a week now. thanks in anticipation. |

Thanks - but no luck. I tried to boot with pfix=ram, noram - exactly the same result. Still searching..... |
There are many puppies and puplets which ones are you trying? If it says pup_301 you might not have the latest one? The one to try first is Puppy 4.1.2 at http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/...uppy-linux-412
Try the top one first and if it that doesn't work try the retro. Here's a list of different puplets: http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/puplets_view Artie |
Same Problem
If anyone has found a solution, I am also having this exact same problem. I also registered just to post this.
I am trying to install it on an IBM Thinkpad 770ed. It boots from a CD-ROM drive, but hangs with the following error: Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives.... Seraching deaper, sub-sub-folders in partitions....lupu_520.sfs not found. Dropp ing out to initial-ramdisk console... /bin/sh: cant access tty; job control turned off My system specs: 266 Mhz PII 144MB RAM (yes, 16+128) 7GB harddrive Thanks, if anyone has found a solution. |

Hi guys, following thing worked for me.:
Press F3 before loading.. get into the boot options window and type in the below command with option as.. puppy pmedia=cd and hit enter. This worked for me. |
