Presario R3000 Laptop owner Looking for advice on Distro to install

never having installed Linux B4

I have a Presario R3000 laptop and hope to install Linux as dual boot system.
After looking on the forums for advice I noticed that most R3000 laptops mention them as being AMD64 based with Nvidia graphic chip sets.
My laptop on the otherhand is
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
ATI Mobility Radion 9000/9100 IGP graphics chip set sharing 125Mb ram out of 1.25Gb
System ram.

I have tried Suse 10.2 live and Unbunto live and they both seem to work, but the wireless
network does not seem to be enabled in either case. I have tried to configure all wireless settings the same as are set in Wdoze with out sucess.
I am unable to connect to the wired LAN as I have a hardware fault that has taken out the
interface (Dropped it oops ).
Is there a Distro that will drive the Broadcom 802.1b wireless or will I need to obtain a
new wireless card or usb dongle for this laptop? As I need the network connection.

Thanks

Hi,

I am thinking that all distributions will support your wireless but it is a matter of the configuation. My advice is that you walk before you can run.

I recommend that you worry about installing your linux system before moving onto the wireless. I installed Debian on my mothers system last year and initially had to use a wired connection before using the madwifi system to configure the wireless system several days later.

Also, when running a 'live' system you cannot easily save any changes/configuration changes you make.

That system has now run since December with no faults at all, now that's stability.

Hope this advice helps even if it doesn't directly answer your query.

My problem is if the wireless does not work, I cannot use a wired connection as the wired connection is broken.

And if the windows partition goes down. I will be left with no internet connection to obtain advice.

This reminds me of "Catch 22" a little.

Also I will have to download all I need through W'dose until I can get Linux to connect through Wifi.

Cheers.

I have a presario v5115 and took me a wee while to get the wireless working. Broadcom have not released Linux drivers and so they have to be either backhacked or converted from windows drivers.

I use Kubuntu for my laptop and the process is relatively painless. Install ndiswrapper, ndiswrapper-utils & ndisgtk.Use ndisgtk to extract the information from the windows installation files (you may have to try several to get one that will work). Edit '/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist' and add the line 'blacklist bcm43xx'. I use wifi-radar for managing connections as its just so easy.

Once it's set up its very easy
