power (noflushd) and kde issues

hi everyone, i just found the oddest, most disapointing thing, hopefully some of you have more feedback. after trying some of the things ive found on the site here (running top - cool, or ps aux) and reading about people seeing kde as using lots of resources i decided to startup with windowmaker as its already installed (instead of KDE.

for the first time i just heard the hardrive shut down while i was web browsing!! this is great, and bad. windowmaker is very slick and seems to display quicker, and I certainly have less processes running now. but it';d be nice to switch over to kde if i choose.. but if its going to keep the disk spinning and processor busy while it does nothing i will have to look elsewhere, thats completely unacceptable. any tips for killing processes in kde or is that just how it goes??

i have hdparm setup, noflushd, and all the usual recomemnedations for thiose 2 programs' associated docs.. i nopticed alot of kde related processes running and the drive wasnt spinning down. it did, as i say in windowmaker last night.

im running this mini-itx system on solar power and i pretty new to linuix. trying to minimize power useage to the MAXIMUM amount possible. thanks for any tips along those lines.

i posted here as its seemed a likely place to find people concerned about power management with linux, thanks!
