power management problem

i have just installed mepis 2003.10 (it's based on Debian) on my laptop and the same problem that i had with other distros seems to never disappear: i can't seem to make it suspend or standby. it has ACPI, it has APM already built in the system but it just doesn't work! without those functions i'm going to have to uninstall it for i have the clear impression that linux consumes more power than windows.

how can i make this work??

my laptop is an ASUS L3500D with an AMD Athlon XP 2000+

you have to recompile the kernel for acpi support, or use slackware and choose the acpi kernel on install...

and for futher notice apm and acpi are two totally different animals, dont get them confused as being the same.

and no linux does NOT "consume more power than windows"
