Poor graphics performance

My work has supplied me with a Toshiba Tecra A2. Fedora core 4 seems to work pretty well, except that it didn't recognise the screen possibly. I'm currently running in 1024x768 as a "generic LCD" and that seems to work. I'm unconcerned about whether the wireless nextwork works, but firewire might be important in the future.

Anyhow, to my linux question. I've noticed that the graphics performance on this machine seems poor. I get about 570fps with glxgears. Does this mean that my machine is software rendering (seems fast for that) or hardware rendering (seems slow for that)? The renderer string output by glxinfo is:

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 852GM/855GM 20040919 x86/MMX/SSE2

Cheers,

open console
Code:

$glxinfo
See if direct rendering says -YES
