Please help me to install linux in my sony vaio pcg-r505gl,i dont have docking statio
hello everyone,
I have a old sony vaio pcg-r505gl laptope,i lost os from it now i want to install os on it..i dont have a docking system or external usb drive,
i think the only way to install os in it is network boot, and i dont know how to do it,i try in several shops all of them say no.they cant do network boot..so any one please help me to install a os on my super old laptope..
i am a average computer user so please gave me tips from low level..
The specifications of this Vaio say that it has a CD drive. Is yours not working? Do you have any operating system at all, any backup CD to install one?
If you have a working CD, try a live-cd. You will have to change the device boot order in the system BIOS. If you can boot Windows, you should be able to use UNetbootin.
Guess you could also fool around with a gpxe or pxe server. See also slitaz.
I sometimes mount a shared cd or other networked installable drive on a lan and boot to some floppy or cd for network install. Many distro's have it. The most easy way to boot to linux is a Knoppix cd/dvd. It has a setup for knoppix terminal server. A few mouse clicks and you can remote boot your old system to a lan.
Might be able to use something like plop.
The issue I see is that you most likely have very little ram.
