PIII 800 vs. VIA 1ghz C3 Nehemiah CPU

Hello all
I am so confused. All I want to do is buy a laptop that I can run Linux on. I only have so much money to spend and I want to get the most bang for my buck. All I do on my computer now is surf the web, stream and listen to music, watch divx's and am learning to program.
I have narrowed it down to two lapops, one is a new ECS G320 running the new VIA 1ghz C3 Nehemiah CPU with 256 MB Ram, a 20 Gig harddrive and a CD Drive. It also has 2 usb2 ports and a firewire port. The second computer is a refurbished IBM with a PIII 800 Mhz processor, 256 megs of ram and a 6 gig hardrive.
My question is which one do you think will be the best for me.
Thank you,
Dave

The P!!! will prob'ly have better number-crunching performance... From what I've seen around the net, a C3 is about equivalent to a similar speed Celeron. The C3 will be more than good-enough for everyday use.

You'll have to decide if one of the packages out-weighs the other... Does the IBM have a CD-ROM? You'll prob'ly need one to install Linux. (Some distros have a network-installation you can run and download everything from the net as it installs... Which means you'll need a quick connection.)

20GB laptop hard-drives run about $70.

Mmmm. Choices

Well, I have a VIA C3 based server and the same model of IBM laptop so.......

The ECS VIA C3 based laptop (as pointed out) will have about the same performance as a 1GHz Celeron machine. The good news is that all VIA CPUs are very low power devices so not only will your machine run cooler but the battery will last a long time.

Set against that we have the IBM laptop. All IBM machines are built like a brick privy and apart from (sometimes) questionable battery life they will never fail you.

Both run Linux without any problem and performance of the two machines is almost identical so you have a straight choice of ECS or Big Blue. I'd go for the IBM and slot a bigger hard drive in there.

I have 2 C3's (not as laptop) mainly for web browsing, mail, music and not to heavy work. They work excellent, low noise, low power.

I Have 2 laptops 1 p3- 500 and 1 amd 1.8.

The plus on the C3 is, it has USB-2 and Fire wire. That has the advantage, that you can almost everything connect to it.

Since last year, we don't buy machines with all kind of stuff in it. We buy machines with at least
some USB2 ports. Then you can buy HD's, CDRW etc and you can hang it on the machine you want. Keep in mind those things are mostly only an hour a day in use. An extra advantage is that if you buy another one or a desktop, you can use all the usb equipment.

Fire wire is nice but it is not so much in use as USB.

Both machines are good, but without USB2 in my opinion it is a bad investment.
I woul buy some RAM. I have in all my machines at least 500 MB. It saves a lot of time.
