Pentium Centrino driver for Linux
 

Hi guys!

I have a Centrino notebook. I knew Intel doesn't officialy support Linux, meanwhile, they're sponsoring a driver for the Linux community to download, test and use it. I'd like to know if anyone here uses it and if it's worth to install. I'm newbie, thus it seems a little bit hard to install the driver on Linux, isn't it!?

I use for both WAP and WEP authentications... could you give a tip about settings in Linux?!

i know that there is no open driver but i think i heard that suse either has a proprietary one or that one is in the works... it was in the news a while ago on linux.org I believe.

you ought to check either the suse site or perhaps kernel.org?

either way it's built into the kernel so if you want to use centrino you would have to buy suse (if such a kernel actually exists)...

The Kernel 2.6.8 has specific support for Pentium M (includign Dothan class) but 2.4 happily runs as well

I just got a centrino laptop, and while the driver is still a bit immature, it does work. Depending on what chipset you have, you want one of the following:

http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/
http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/

They are moving to unite both chipsets into the same driver, but they aren't there yet.

Yes, it works fine. I use a WAP encryption at home, so it was not a problem to connect with the access point, by just setting up the WAP key in the Fedora's network set up window. I have 2 questions:

1) In my university, I need a WEP certification to get connected to the network. How can I set up WEP in Linux?

2) Like in Windows that shows the network status besides the watch, how can I check the network status (availability of wireless network, online or offline etc.) in Fedora? I mean, to have the same status besides the watch in the inferior bar of the system?

Hi everyone!

I installed FC2 in my machine and followed all the steps to install the ipw2100 driver, but I keep receiving this message when trying to probe Centrino:

[root@localhost bcampos]# /sbin/ifup eth1
/sbin/ifup: line 6: fg: no job control
/sbin/ifup: line 7: fg: no job control

Does anyone know what it means?
