PCMIA Ethernet Card Problem
 

Ethernet card is supposedly one of the supported brands - Netgear FA 410 TX
The hardware manager shows the two pcmia slots. Computer is running FC2 and is Dell Inspiron 5000. Tried to shut off plug and play, but the bios doesn't do anything. Googled the problem and it refers to folders that aren't there.

Activation results in "pcnet_cs device eth0 does not seem to be prsent, delaying initialization"

Also while booting there's a really long message about PCMIA card not working right - delaying initialization.

use the command dmesg to see what errors, if any got spit up

Is the answer just using the options listed above? If that is the answer, what file do I have to change and what location is it? (FC2)

well, to get acpi off, you must add that to your /etc/lilo.conf file, then re-run lilo
but that doesn't seem to affect pcmcia/network cards. Try typing

cardmgr status

and see what it returns, also, let the puter boot, then insert the nic card, and see what happens

cardmgr status -> it doesn't give me anything - just options that I could use - I man cardmgr and nothing like status comes up.

Tried booting up and then inserting it - nothing.

I did do something like service status-all and it says that cardmgr is stopped. I have a huge feeling that this has to do with the whole problem. Any ideas?

cardmgr is now running. A wireless card that I got today finally lights up. But I don't know how to make it work. Is there a generic setting that I pick in the internet configuration settings?

in slack it is netconfig, in mandrake it was ifup, i'd try ifup eth0 (or wi0, depending on your distro)

I finally got the ethernet card to work with the following:

1. root -> type neat&
2. delete all devices
3. reboot with nic out of pcmcia slot
4. get to desktop and insert nic
5. check under hardware and it has my brand (even tho that brand is not directly selectable if I were to try and manually set it up)
6. Setup and Activate device

The annoying thing is that I need to do this every time I reboot. Any ideas there?

Since I had it working I used yum to update pcmcia-cs and kudzu so perhaps the problem's gone. I'll let you guys know once I try it.

ok, so far so good. We'll see what happens when I reboot later without the card connected to the router. So if u have FC2 -> do what I said above, update kudzu and pcmcia-cs, and things should work.

I'll update on the wireless card momentarily.

wireless card doesn't work. Ethernet card seems to work over boots altho it first says that etho0 isn't there because pcmcia is loaded AFTER ethernet is. Wonder if people have changed this before on their laptops?
