PCMCIA wireless card kills laptop in slot 1

As the title says, if I insert my wireless card into slot 1, then the laptop stops with a kernel crash, that doesn't even allow for any operation at all. Can't telnet or ssh into it, the only option is to power off.
The screen displays lots of ndiswrapper and kernel debug info, and the last line invariably reads 'unable to sync interrupt', then the laptop stops.
But, if I use slot 2, this doesn't happen, and the laptop behaves normally. Anyone any idea why, and any siggestions for a cure?

Check your BIOS for automatic IRQ allocation and other such things that might be causing it. You might also want to make sure that the right services are started to cope with the new card - I think hotplug and such like in Control Panel.
