PCMCIA Port - Fedora Core
 

Ok, I grabbed this old KDS Laptop of mine.
P3 800, 128MB, 40g

I spent all day yesterday installing Fedora Core on it. I am trying to get it totally configured and up and running. When I look in the Hardware Browser, it shows my PCMCIA port.

PCI1410 PC card
Driver: yenta_socket

But when I load the PCMCIA tool, it says "No PCMCIA controller detected"

I checked out pcmcia-cs, but when I run 'make config' it tells me I don't have the right 'cc' tool.

How can I get this working? I just want to slap a nic card in it.

I am new to linux.

Please, any help would be great. I am trying to learn to use this as XP has begun to bore me. But I can't get past this one step.

hmm. you have given them a whole day to reply. I am also a newbie, and using a KDS 6840 (have to double check that number) which appears to be what you have. unfortunately I don't know much. I installed RH 9 and it appears to find the PCMCIA port, but I can't get a USR 2410 wifi card to work yet. Where is this PCMCIA tool of which you speak. perhaps we can help each other through this, if no one else can help.

Thats where the tool is I was trying to use is. Still have had no luck on getting the ports to work. I think I am just going to put XP back on it. The laptop is totally usless to me in its current state. I'll have to slap linux on some old POS system I have in the backroom and try learning from that.

well I thought I had mad some progress last night. I installed the WLAN driver RPM from
http://prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us/
and they seem to create a connection to the PCMCIA card (light goes solid,couple beeps)
But now the GUI doesn't auto direct me to the orinoco/prism2 driver, and when I select it I get a new error telling me orinoco_cs device is not there.

ok, so which wireless card are you using? do you know the chipset. without knowing that, progress will be slow. are you working in the GUI or command line and do you know how to use CAT to make logs of command feedback? Mind you, I am already exhausting my knowlege of linux in these queries.. I plan to buy a good book.


did you wonder through the thread I posted earlier. I suspect for you to get any real attention you need to post more specifics, much like the poster "jipe" did in the referenced post.

Hmm. I have Fedora Core 1 installed on my Thinkpad, 400MHz Celeron, 256MB Ram, 4.3G HD (sigh) and I am using an IBM (Xircom) Card Bus Enthernet card (PCMCIA). The machine correctly recieves DHCP info at boot but I have to restart my PCMCIA service or eject/insert the card after each boot to get it to function correctly.
This doesn't seem directly related to your problem but is in that area, good luck.
