I've since tried using Static ip numbers instead of using Dynamic, and now when I ping my IP number I get returns but still get nothing when I ping a name.
If I type ping yahoo.com, the cursor just drop down a line and shows nothing and don't move anymore. I didn't have another ip number to try pinging at this writing so I don't know what happens. I have to unhook the cable internet cable line to use this computer to get back online.
With static protocol, I do see the ISP ip info listed when I type ipconfig -a.

Well now I believe the 3com pcmcia nic may be bad, the light never blinks. So I have my original Xircom dual mode 10/100 nic & 56k modem. The light blinks with the xircom installed.
I've only used the xircom nic a few times when I took the laptop to work and set it up on the job's network to get internet access only. But I had to set it up using the job's static info.
Today I tried using the 3com nic with Win98. I haven't tried it since I've had cable broadband, and this is when I noticed the nic light never blinks. So I switch to the xircom nic and after putting it in, and typing winipcfg command, I see what looks like the job's static ip numbers showing.
How do I go about changing this from static to dynamic? I'm kinda lost on how to setup networking using Win98.
On my tower system, when using Win98, it seems once the nic was recognized, net access was up & running.

I reinstalled Debian base using the 3Com nic and it was detected and installed the correct drivers. I see them listed when I do the lsmod command.
During the Configure the Network section of the install, I put in all my isp ip info. So now when I reboot, the nic is up and configured. I see it when I do ifconfig, the right ip addresses are showing.
The problem now is when I went to do apt-get update, it seems to connect but nothing is coming across to my laptop. I see the first site thats connected in /etc/apt/sources.list but for percentages it stays at 0 percent. Then after awhile it goes to the next site and for the previous one it say something about Something Wicked has happen.
When I try to ping, say www.yahoo.com, the cursor drops down a line but never show the return info. Same with if I try to ping yahoo ip address.
