Hello. I have tried to install two different flavors, Mandriva and Ubuntu. I've tried 2010 and 9.10 and neither one has worked. I keep getting a black screen with both in setup. Actually got Ubuntu to install fine and actually reached desktop in 9.04. But as soon as I upgrade, it gives me a black screen with sound telling me it's at login screen. But I can't see anything. This is the worst experience I've ever had with linux. It's never acted this way. This is a new machine with WIN7 on it and I wanted to setup dual-boot. But something is horribly wrong, I just can't figure it out. Can anyone please assist? Thank you so much in advance.

may I ask:

can you start up both distro's to graphical desktop???

I think that Safe mode or something like that might help if you don't get to the desktop environment in the live-cd (Mandriva)

when a distro is installed and show a black screen, try

Control-alt-F1
and log in as root
(maybe you have to use safe mode or another boot option)

=> then try commands like xorgconfig (or xorgcfg => one of them is for graphical environment) or video
: configure with low settings (experiment!)
(these are only suggestions, maybe there is something else wrong)

If this doesn't work after some tries, post it here!

Ok, I was able to get in with the command nomodeset at boot screen. Now, I'm on my desktop. But obviously video is bad and I can't adjust resolution. I tried to edit grub but it's blank. Kinda stuck. Thx for the responce.
