Over my head

Hello all,

I decided that I would install Linux and learn a little more about it. I have a laptop that I use to surf the internet in the bedroom and chat as well as check mail. I also use it to take trip and do support but I figured later I could add a dual boot and have access to windows. I use Powerpoint on it for the shows so that would be a must have app....

I will list the next steps quickly because I had very few problems....

Download Fedora from RedHat
Install

Pretty simple....seems to look good and I am instrested in using it....

A hurdle to get over.....? My NETWORK CARD.... it does not come with supported Linux support which I am sure you guys are used to hearing a lot. It is a wireless 802.11G product from D-Link....

Some good news?

There seems to be good beta support for it....

at google

and other resourses for a driver.....I have even downloaded a driver....

at sourceforge under projects and madwifi.....

The real issue is when I type "make" it tells me there is a .config file that is not there.....then it stops.....the .config file that it is looking for is supposed to be in a directory that shows up in RED on the PC when I try to browse to it? Very odd.....

As you can tell I am very new to the Linux arena. I want to learn more about it. I can take direction well of course so try not to flame me too bad. Also I do have the laptop on the internet with a Xircom driver that came with Fedora. It is working well so far....

Any ideas?

Biff

What is the name of the missing file?

Could you give us the name of the RED directory and its ownership and permissions? You can find ownership and permissions with this command:

ls -l /pathname/directoryname

"try not to flame me too bad."
We don't flame people here.

Thank you for the quick reply.....here is what I could find out so far...

The Red directory is called build and it says

build -> ../../../usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl

it is looking for .config in that directory

It is telling me no rule to make target.....?

Thank you for your help....

Biff

"build -> ../../../usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl"

build is a symbolic link. It points to /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl which is the source for your kernel. In order for the compile to work you must have your kernel source installed in /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl. So check to see if /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl exists and if it does not then install your Fedora kernel source rpm before you do the compile.

OK...a little farther but then again not far at all....

I reinstalled and I believe I have the source on the drive.....

I can get in to that build directory that WAS red and it shows some directories.

There is a line in the Makefile.inc included with the driver that says....

include ${KERNEL_PATH}/.config

it seems to stop when it hits that line?

I am now working off of the default Fedora install. No updates or anything.....any recomendations?

Biff

PS Thanks so much for your help......

if you like I could set up ssh? for you to get in and look at it....

"include ${KERNEL_PATH}/.config"

resolves to "include /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2179.nptl/.config"

"I am now working off of the default Fedora install. No updates or anything.....any recomendations?"

If you are using a 3 CD install set then you don't have any source code installed. The source code comes on an additional 3 CDs. In any case, if you are using the default install then no source code was installed.

You can download the source rpms from here:
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/p...elopment/SRPMS/

You can buy the complete 3 CD source set here.
http://www.linuxcd.org/view_distro.php

You do not have to do a reinstall to add your kernel source to /usr/src. You can do it with the rpm command once you find your kernel source.
