Orinoco 8460 802.11a/b Combo Card
Anyone figured out how to get these to work, or if there's any chance they will work some day? Proxim says that they are not supported under linux and, since they've been discontinued in favor of an 802.11 a/b/g Combo Card, never will be. I haven't been able to figure out if there's an open source driver for these or not, or even what the chipset is. Can anyone help?
Thanks! |
I have a Proxim Gold 8420 that only does b. Proxim released a beta driver for it, but it works fine. Also, it runs off of the hermes2 chipset. I'd be willing to bet that yours is very similar to mine. I don't know if it will work or not, but you can get the drivers that I have from www.greenblaze.com.

Thank you very much. I have downloaded the drivers and look forward to trying them out!

OK, I have looked into this more deeply and it looks like my card has an Atheros chipset, which I think means that the proxim driver is wrong and that I need MadWifi, instead. But I haven't had a chance to check this out yet....

MADWIFI WORKS!!
Ok, I haven't actually USED it yet, but I have a Proxim / Orinoco Gold ComboCard (Model 8460-05) and just sucessfully loaded the drivers for it using MadWifi. I've been trying to get this damn card to work under Debian for 2 WEEKS, following all of the instructions from the Orinoco / Proxim site, saying that their driver works, and everyone else saying the wavelan_cs, wavelan2_cs, and orinoco_cs modules should work for this card. NO GO! The modules loaded fine but I was ABSOLUTELY NEVER able to sucessfully alias an eth or wlan device to it (IE eth1, wlan0, etc.), even though I had everything correct in /etc/network/interfaces, and all the stuff in /etc/pcmcia regarding this card and wireless lan cards. I stumbled upon this thread and now it is working, thanks to MadWifi!! I thought I was going crazy... Thanks guys!!
