open zaurus question about apps?

i just got my zaurus and installed OZ on it with opie.
what exactly are .ipk's? is this the only way you can install things?
and also,
now that i have OZ on it, how do i put java back on it? and can i put the java compiler on it so i can do my school work?
and vi is part of a larger file; is it possible to install vim or in some way get the color coding and auto-indenting for when i write java programs?
