Open Zaurus can't use my CF card after I formatted it.
I used this card (128MB CF) to flash my Zaurus to Open Zaurus last night. It worked well and the OS is fine. Other cards are recognized correctly. I formatted this card thinking it needed it (bad idea) and even formatting it fat16, the card is recognized as a IDE drive and the packages I put on it (ipk files) are not seen.
I ran parted on it and it says the OS thinks its geometry is different than it really is. Is there any way to change the geometry detected by SuSE 9?
If anyone out there has made this mistake or knows a solution to this mess please help. I have googled this to death. I am afraid the card may be shot, but I want to be sure before I go out and buy another one.
Where does a Zaurus running OZ mount IDE drives other than /mnt/cf (it's not there)?
do i understand correctly then that the files are not readable on either the pc or the zaurus? if this is so then i dont know, did you try to format it again? maybe the card then.
if its only the zaurus though: i have noticed sometimes the z says 'new card: ide' or something like that but the files arent there. solution- go to konsole and do 'umount /mnt/cf' and 'mount /mnt/cf'

I seem to remember a warning not to format your card for ext2fs since you then would not be able to flash your Z using this card.
fat16 is the correct filesystem to be using and should work just fine.

Never tried parted on a flash card. Didn't know you could do this... I have SuSE 9 as well, might give it a try with one of my old dinky cards.

About the most helpful advice I can give you is to try it on a DosBox and see if it works there. You shouldn't have any trouble reading/formatting it in Windows.

That's where it should be.
Might I rant please?
You would think that a guy with nearly 1200 posts on LQ would know to list what hardware he is talking about. A 5x00? 7x0? 8x0? What???
Off-topic:
Should I get the SL-6000 or order a SL-860 from dynamism?

Yeah I probably should have mentioned it is a SL5500 Z. Shheessh, 1100 posts and all of a sudden they expect common sense from me?
I did format it again using fat16 and the Z still couldn't read it. My wifes Windows machine reads it fine (I am finally Win-free). It dawned on me to try using my Nikon Coolpix 775 to reformat the card, as the Z has always been able to read previous cards formatted with it. No go, the Z still can't read it. So I took the card out of the camera and swapped it with the card I use in the Z, and am happily installing programs on the Z again. Not exactly the best fix (or really a fix at all) but it solved my problem for the time being. The incorrect geometry rating leads me to believe that I hosed the cards partition table in a way that is not going to be easy to fix. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I am looking for a low-level format utility for CF cards in hopes that it might save the card.

That's no worse than someone with 500+ not being able to figure out where to look for his replies - or, sorry I'm late.

What are you using for an fstab entry?
Have you tried?:
mount -t fat16 /dev/sda1 /mnt/cf
I did come across some posts that says to make sure that you have your card set to the correct partition type (not just one that is usable). I think it should be set to type "6" (that's what mine is set to. Cards smaller than 32 meg might be set to type "4".
I would suggest finding someone with a Kodak DX3600. I ran into a similar issue loading the kernel on an iPaq (Guess that's what I get for being too cheap to buy the serial cable!) Mandrake and Windows refused to even detect the card until I wiped it with the EasyShare.

As it turned out the card was bad. It stopped working in all devices after I posted this. I tried to repartition it a few times but it appears the card is toast. I used a different card and all is well. OZ is on the Z, but for some reason the ipks made by the scripts from killefiz don't work. So I have no handcom, Opera, etc. It's a bummer. Unless I find another way to get a hold of them I may have to start over (with the sharp rom) and go through all this again.
As far as hancom goes, I couldn't get the scripts to work, it would create ipk's with a file size of 0k. but here ou can find info on getting opera7. crashed alot on my OZ but apparently many others with same setup had no problems.

The page at Openzaurus said that their ROM came with Konqueror, but it is not on my Zaurus after the flash. I currently have no browser for my Z. I guess I will compile the konquerer from killefiz and see if that works.

Cool thanks Brain, I will check that out. I don't need anything fancy, I just need a browser. I really dig OZ, it is much nicer to use than the Sharp ROM.
