Older IBM 770 Model Laptop

I need suggestions on what distro to install on these old machine. It is running Windows 2000 Pro, but it drags. HDD is abput 8 GB, RAM is at 256Mb. Is there a LM, Fed, or one of the main stream distros customized for this type of machine? I plan on using it for console work and just learning on it, thanks:)

Id try antiX-

There is a few distros that would run on that system, antiX is just one of them. IMO it would be one of if not the best for that hardware, others would disagree.

If it drags with Windows 2000 then it will drag with Linux.

I recommend a command-line only (server) install of your favorite distro. Personally I would choose Debian netinstall. This site has some great suggestions for old hardware: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/09...-old-computer/

Was it ever a good working system? I guess over time windows slows down. Might boot a few live cd's to see if it will work. Be sure you burn the cd's at slowest speeds and use best quality disks. Those old cd drives don't like burned disks.
