Old notebook - Mint 18.1

Hi, I have a old notebook that had installed mint18.1 (XFCE) for a long time and use.
I must reinstall Mint18.1 without problems. I run usual commands:
$ sudo apt-get update and
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
When I reboot the computer everything looks normal, the buttom menu open normally, the folders work normally, the workspace change normally,
but when I try to run any application from menu nothing happens, literally nothing, it's like a click an empty space.
Even when I try to execute the same app from a terminal happens the same.
I type (for example) $ sudo synaptic in a prompt, ask me my password, put my password and press enter and other prompt appears. No error message, literally nothing.
And when I try to add a new item in the panel appers a banner for "restart" or "cancel" the applet than am I trying to install. Impossible to add.
It's firts time I see something like this, no clue about it. I need the machine for work and by the moment no chance to get a newone.
Thank you for any help in advance.

Try CTRL+ALT+F2, log in, and try to run a command like ls. Did the upgrade finish without errors?
