I am considering getting a 14" (1920*1080) laptop and connecting it to my 24" (1920*1080) monitor and using an external keyboard + mouse. I aim to disable the laptop screen and only use the 24" monitor screen. Would there be any issues?
In my experience, even VGA connections are acceptable. I've connected several laptops via docking stations to even dual monitors with no problems. Certainly HDMI would be better.
With the external monitor connected, all you should need to do to "disable" the laptop monitor is to close the lid.
Almost all quality laptops have an external display but even if they don't you can sometimes get a usb to video out.
Simply stated, they are made to do that.
Is the main thing besides the right ports (like hdmi to hdmi), to make sure both laptop and ext monitor support the same res e.g. 1920*1080?
The external monitor doesn't need to be the same resolution as the built-in monitor, 'tho I will concede I have problems getting an old Dell laptop running Linux to use 1920x1080 on an external monitor...but I think that's mostly a driver issue...and the laptop is very old. It wasn't a problem when it was running Windows.
