Occasional sound on Mandriva 2008

I have Mandriva 2008 on my Acer Travelmate 280 (I think made in 2003). Form ever since there is no sound for a period of time (weeks or months after several bootups), then once it comes (only after booting).The sound device is:
Intel Corporation|82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller
Mandriva has the default driver as "snd_intel8x0".

I'm not sure what to do now, please help. I'm looking to have OpenSuse or Ubuntu but I don't think my BIOS recognize the [new] boot files or it may be the cd drive which has some issues. I have tried.

Try cleaning optical lense on cd drive.
