Obtain ESN from embedded EVDO card that is active?

Good evening everyone,
I have several CF-18 & CF-19 tablets that I use. All use embedded EVDO devices running on Ubuntu 6.10. The devices connect through ppp as their active internet connection.

I am going through doing some inventory reconciling of active ESN's and trying to find a way to obtain the ESN number via a commandline utility. I know that you can't issue AT+ commands on an active ppp connection on ttyUSB0 as you'll get a busy error returned. Is there any way to get this info while the connection is active?

Any help is most appreciated.

Thank you,
Jeremy
