I have an HP Pavillion, and the graphics card is an nvidia geforce go 6150. I ran
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx
and then ran the config script
sudo nvidia-glxconfig
when I restart the xorg server I get a blank screen. If I restart with an external monitor attached I get a picture on the external monitor. If I edit the xorg.conf file and change nvidia back to nv all is fine again.
No worries, got part of your reply in my inbox though:

I think that I'm going to have to use OpenSuse to fix this problem. I have 10.1 on my desktop, the only reason I chose Kubuntu for my laptop is the fact that my university runs an Ubuntu mirror, so I thought that would make updates etc. easier.
Sax2 is awesome...

Any suggestions?
For any interested parties, the problem has been fixed. I upgraded to the development branch, Feisty Fawn, and I now have 3d support.
I have an HP Pavilion laptop as well running Suse 10.2. Suse 10.2 works great with almost everything but I still can't figure out how to get the nvidia drivers to work correctly. I really want 3d graphics. When I searched the forum I hadn't seen your post or it would have saved me a lot of time. changing nvidia to nv was the key, but i didn't figure it out for a while. If you do find a way to install the nvidia driver and configure it successfully I would be very interested. I'll let you know if I figure it out. Here is a link to my post. Someone was nice enough to suggest how to do it. I haven't had the time to try it but it's comforting I know how to get X back up and running without a reinstall.
By the way - the only other things I still want to get working is the broadcomm wireless card, and the web cam. I don't think there are drivers for the webcam yet. The wireless is a pain but I'm still working on it.
